Amendments to conference resolutionsAmendments to resolutions must be submitted by 22 October 2008. Respect branches can submit up to three amendments. Any six members can submit an amendment. Anyone wanting to submit an amendment and seek support from five others can ask for it to be posted on the Respect website.
These amendments have been submitted to the national conference:
- Amendment to Motion 2 on Respect and the Economy
Replace point 3 with:
"This has now led to a major crash and the nationalisation of large chunks of the financial system, in the UK, US and elsewhere. This desperation by right-wing, pro-market governments to save their system from bankruptcy by methods borrowed (in a distorted way) from the left is a major defeat for neo-liberalism and opens up a huge political space to argue for rational planning and social ownership of the commanding heights of the economy."
Delete point 4
Before point 5 add section header:
"Conference Resolves" and renumber points 5 to 7 as "Conference Resolves" 1 to 3.
Proposed by Southwark Respect
- Amendment to Motion 5 on Labour Government
At the end, add the following:
"as a victory for the Tories would be a shift to the right and a set-back for working people and the oppressed. However, we call for a vote wherever possible for credible candidates to the left of New Labour."
Proposed by: Fred Leplat, Steph Grant, Piers Mostyn, Mark Thorne, Giorgos Galanis, Sheila Malone, Patrick Scott (all members of Islington Respect)
- Amendment to Motion 21 on Iran
- Under Conference resolves, delete the second bullet point, and insert new point as follows:
"to support the struggles for democratic rights of workers, women, students, gays, religious minorities and oppressed nationalities against the theocratic regime".
- Under Conference resolves, delete the third bullet point, and insert new point as follows:
" to support initiatives of campaigns such as Hands Off the People of Iran and the Campaign Against Sanctions and Military Intervention."
Proposed by: Fred Leplat, Steph Grant, Piers Mostyn, Mark Thorne, Giorgos Galanis, Sheila Malone, Patrick Scott (all members of Islington Respect)
