14th January 2010
The Merseyside branch of Respect, which began to get organised only last April, has been developing steadily and has attracted several new members. We are now meeting regularly and participating in local campaigns of organisations such as the Stop The War Coalition, Viva Palestina, Liverpool Friends of Palestine, Colombia and Venezuela Solidarity Campaigns, support for the postal workers and fraternal relations with the Green Party and the emerging Trade Union and Socialist Coalition.
We have also sponsored activities of our own including literature stalls in Church Street in the city centre, and on December 15th a "Solidarity Fiesta" celebrating international solidarity with popular resistance in Palestine and Colombia and progressive governments in Venezuela, Cuba and other Latin American countries (see picture). Also eight of our members participated in an enthusiastic delegation to the Respect National Conference in Birmingham in November.
We are now preparing for the General Election in which we hope to have a Respect candidate in Liverpool Wavertree.
